Over 100 people attended the final public meeting regarding the future of Belfair. Dr. Brian Petersen, co-chair of the Belfair Subarea Planning Committee got the program started. "We think this is a plan we can all embrace and be proud of," he said. He then invited Commissioner Wes Johnson to say a few words...

The committee achieved a quorum this month! There was quite a discussion about changing the timing of the SR3 alternate route (aka "bypass") from the current "10-15 years or when warranted" to "3-5 years."

Finally! A quorum was achieved this month!
Roger Brooks, President of Destination Development spoke to the committee about tourism and how to exploit our area as a tourist destination, thereby bringing money into our town. "The idea is to import more cash than you export. A tourism-friendly city will spawn non-tourism industries faster than others."
It was a very interesting and informative meeting.

There wasn't a quorum at this meeting, but MAKERS went ahead with their presentation on transportation options. John Owen of MAKERS introduced Marni Heffron of Heffron Transportation who walked the audience through some of the data and went through some of the options they see as improvements for Belfair.

Belfair Subarea Planning Committee Meeting Notes, March 2003 (3/18/2003) [New]
Bob Hager gave an update on the Pacific Northwest Salmon Center. ... Tim Wing: We ought to be looking at the most flexible plan. I want to see a Salmon Center, but we've got a long way to go to raise $18 million. We're not looking at that in the close future and, in reality, it might not ever be there, at least in the current plan. The medical center is dependent on passing a $50 million bond issue. It seems unreasonable to make a plan around two issues that may not be there. I think we need to build a bypass soon and get traffic out of this town. Let the market tell us where builders want to build and people want to live. We should encourage development in the core but should not eliminate options for other areas in the UGA...

2007/05-15: Belfair Infrastructure & SR 3 Corridor Improvement Project [New]
Thanks to an Open Public Documents Request to Mason County, I received a copy of the below letter and an 11-page petition regarding the Belfair infrastructure/SR 3 corridor improvement project.
Brian Petersen's petition is general, suggesting only moving up the timeline on SR 3 and sewer construction. It says nothing about reprioritizing these two projects in relation to the bypass.
SR 3 improvements and sewers could arguably be in the best interest of Belfair businesses, but there are far more commuters traveling through Belfair on the way to work and home who not only want SR 3 safety improvements, but also an alternate means of travel around Belfair. If the folks who live here could prioritize the projects, would they want a bypass first to avoid endangering lives even more when the only road through Belfair starts being "improved"?

2004/05: Destination Development Belfair Assessment, Findings & Suggestions Report [New]
In May of 2004, a Tourism Assessment of Belfair was conducted and presented in a two-hour public workshop. A "Visitor Assessment" is a process in which the area is looked at from the eyes of a visitor. No prior research was facilitated, no community representatives were contacted except to set up the workshop, and the town and surrounding area was "secretly shopped."
This is a large PDF file. The report is 43 pages with a lot of photos. Interesting reading.

2003/11-10: Vision for Belfair's future unveiled. The community's character and how it will grow are addressed in the plan [New]
The Belfair Subarea Planning Committee unveiled its growth plan to more than 100 people Saturday morning. The final draft includes recommendations about everything from where new parks should be built to what colors new buildings can be painted in the Belfair Urban Growth Area. Committee recommendations highlight three areas for commercial development -- the current downtown, the Theler Wetlands and proposed salmon center area, and a proposed neighborhood north of downtown.
